Stephenson College NEWS the whole Blog

This entire blog is my whole project in the 2 weeks

I started doing research into Web videos, Tv Idents and News programs. I use this as inspiration for creating a logo and then making the news.

I then created a logo from my inspiration and develop this logo into 3 logos.

However then I got the official brief which meant I didn't need to do a "dead good logo" or a Tv ident. However the research I did on that and the news covered the research criteria on the brief so I got a headstart.

I mind mapped ideas and did a project proposal. I then converted this into a part done storyboard (Not fully done because I didn't know what news to expect) After this I went hunting, looking for news leads and stories I could manage. I emailed Tim Puffer who is a press manager and he said in return that he will try to help me. Unfortunately he didn't reply back.

I also had a conversation with Peter Clarke who could probably help me. We talked about 3 possible news stories which was recorded with a sound recorder. It was quite helpful.

A week has now gone.

In the weekend I produced the graphics. i.e. the studio, the opening grahics, the closing graphics and the text graphics.

On the monday I came in thinking Im stuffed however when I arrived Dan said loads of people have been contacting him about news and I need to go and get the news.

I recorded 3 news stories and interviewed them with Rico Buccheri's help who was the corrispondent.

I then uploaded it and using a logging sheet I put the relevent bits on Premier.

I then finished my complete storyboard and prepared a planned news which was basically about the police assignment to which Jake Baugh won.

I produced relevant scripts for the studio news and the interview. Unfortunately Rico wasn't available and neither was Simon Shelder so I had to rely on Jake Hadley and Andrew Nicholls.

With Andrew it went well, unfortunately when I uploaded it though their was a glow on the table so I would have to choose whether to hand it in badly or redo the whole studio news with Andrew.

Thankfully Andrew was kind to let me film, their was improvement on the script because the interview on the monday and then tuesday didn't happen due to time and the actors being busy so I abandoned it.

Therefore the script was edited down. We reshot it with Andrew and kyle's help and it was better then last time. I cleaverly got him standing up so that their was no table and therefore no possible glow. It worked like a treat, the chroma key worked better this time. and I positioned Andrew correctly.

With all the sequences put together I did the fine tweaks. In my storyboard their was a picture of the topic so I exported the frame I wanted and put it in the appropiate place.

I went through the whole thing and Dan noticed slight mistakes that I could sort and coundn't sort out due to time.

The things I couldn't do was that Ricko should of said "Back to you Andrew" and I should never zoom in with my camera. These 2 vitals points are something I will definately consider later.

The ones I could were the lip sinc which was out of sinc by seconds anf editing the ends where Ricko ranted on. I sorted them out and after all the minor adjustments I rendered it on a FLV and MPEG2 formats.

I evaluated it and it was fitting the brief because it was between 5 - 7 minutes and the whole collage could benifit from it.

All my progress in this assignment is in my Sketchbook which I handed in on time. This was just a summary.

Thanks for Reading and here's my video. I am proud of it and is probably one of the most successful projects for me so far.

Doing some graphics

I was testing yesterday to see if I can pull of some ideas (No point planning something you can't do)

The ideas was the graphics for the intro for the news. I could pull it off in carrara however it was a nightmare to render because it kept on coming up with an error at 125 frame. So I shortened it to 120 frames. It then worked and I uploaded it to Premier. I put a random video next to it and it went well together. So now I know I can pull it off

The Proposal (Please Comment Dan if its worthy enough to see if I can move on the next stage)

Proposal of the TV program

The purpose of the TV program is to broadcast the news at college. This one will be about the reason why the majority of food is at George’s not the Bistro when you consider the Bistro is at the entrance of the college where as Georges isn’t.

I will be managing 3 presenters to tell the news.

The first Presenter will be the lad and he will be in the news studio giving the main news

It will then have the 1st female presenter stating the problem. The she will interview the manager of the bistro who is the 2nd female presenter who will answer the questions.

The 1st female presenter will then answer this and the presenter will then summaries the news then it finishes.

The male presenter summaries the news then it finishes.

Target Audience. People who are interested in studying at Stephenson’s. People who are studying their or teaching their right now and any extra staff or pupils who go to the bistro or Georges

Mediums of delivery are DVD deployment and web deployment via a flash based web player

After the Brief

Today I recieved the brief which cleared tons of ambiguity.

All I have to work on is the web video, No dead good logo and no Tv ident.

The only problem is 2 weeks. Its going to be tough.

I've done the research and brainstorm on the brief

The project proposal is on the next post.

Research

I have done all the research I think is necissary for this point of the assignment.

I researched web videos, (Did this earlier as a homework) Tv idents, the format and design of the news and its enviroment and extra logo's.

Throughout this I went through it and drew inspirations from it and did a "Could Do, Shouldn't Do"

I am now going to do some Initial Ideas concerning the "Dead good logo" because you need to base it on the logo. Not base the logo on the news.

Questions n Answers

Dan had given the class the assignment and it was very vague. For me it was create the news for the college.

Here are the questions;
  1. How much time should I spend on each part of the assignment. ie Research, Development?
  2. What kind of news is it? Does it have to relate to the college?
  3. In the news you interview people so do I put a student immitating someone famous.
  4. Do I invent a DEAD GOOD tv logo or do I rely on a logo done via the class
  5. Do I produce the Tv ident in carara
  6. Do we plan carara via storyboards
  7. Throughout this week weve had pratical lessons teaching us skills we were unknown to. Is there anymore.

Here are the Answers;

  1. Its up to you (decided to do the research to development in the weekend considering we have got 2 weeks.
  2. College news, something like someone interviewing the kitchen staff on raised prices in the Bestro.
  3. Dan is contacting people in travel and tourism for the news.
  4. Do your own Dead good logo. Well come and decide whoe's is worthy.
  5. Yes
  6. Yes
  7. 90% No

I am now going to officaly start the assignment.

Deaf Signing Part 2

Look at the blog before before reading this

This time there was a backlight and the blue screen was lower. So I had kyle sit down for filming.

I repeated the whole process as shown in the blog before.

This is the final video

Compared to the other one there a slight more depth of realasim because there's a light in the background. (If there was a real studio with the video on the wall like it seems there would be a light behind the person.)

Thats why it more realistic and believable.

Deaf Signing

With creating a Deaf Signing there are things you have to consider

  • Postioning (Left Bottom for the person)
  • Colours (No blue or White otherwise the blue screen would be difficult to Key out
  • The filming needs to head high

So I took all these things in account.

I used Garbage Matte to twin any garbage and Chroma Key to get rid of the bluescreen

I also unlinked the sound of the kyle clip so I could delete it.

I put them allthogether in layers and using the motion scaled and repositioned both clips together.

Garbage Matte

Creating a News Enviroment

I start of my doing a simple design of a possible news enviroment in Carara.

I then increased the lighting and possition the light exactly half way and facing foward. (same postion as the clip)

I rendered it as a still clip.

I then filmed Kyle but making sure the camera picked up white light when its white instead of it being blue.

I then captured the video of Kyle on premier and uploaded the news enviroment image.

I used a Chroma Key to get rid of the blue and to make Kyle consistant

After that I used a garbage Matte and dragged it on the video layer.

I got rid of all the "garbage" lights, cameras etc.

There were problems. Ie Kyle moved quite a bit so I had to be very intricute with my garbage matte to make sure parts of kyle don't disappear.

Also Kyle was too big for the pink platform so I had to scale him just right. If it was slightly wrong then it would appear he was flying, sinking or disappearing.

So a lot of tweaks were made and the layer were restricted to fit at the same time. The result is a ridicoulsly small kyle in a massive news enviroment.

Dead Good News

I opened up Fireworks and did a background part of a news program.

I did a black fill canvas and added a text saying "Dead Good News"

I did a Background in Fireworks and a image preview as a jpeg and did forground and a image preview as PNG 32.

I recorded Heather's news and uploaded that and the above to premier.

I then uploaded both fireworks files and but the background at the bottomm, Heathers news in the middle and the forground at the top.

Obviously I could see the background because the Heather video blue screen was in the way. So I went on video effects - Keying - and draged the chroma key on heather's layer.

After that I got rid of the blue using a Chroma Key. And editing the rest using "similarity" "blend" and "threshold" to not only get rid of the blue but to make heather visable and consistant.

I played it back and there was a sligh camera movement so I deleted the remains.

I then neated all the layers and Rendered it as a Windows Media Player file format.

10AM TO 3PM

Started by doing mindmaps of possible can on videos for the college.

Then we condensed it down and had people assigned to different parts of it.

I chose the News mainly politics. Seeing as I believed I could manage that.

Afterwards the class went through what names the station could be called.

We had about 20 possiblities which we then condensed down to 10 which are;

  1. STV
  2. SCS
  3. Mini Feed
  4. Plugin TV
  5. The Big S
  6. Sound
  7. Wizard
  8. View
  9. Wicked
  10. Dead Good
We then took these names and asked people who walked past us in the college. I worked with Katie collected a tally.

The class came back again and we added everyone's final tally

The most popular were

  1. Dead Good
  2. The Big S
  3. Plugin TV
The class decided that the best development was to convert Dead Good to

D G T V

Dead Good Television

After this we were taught how to use a Shooting Schedule and a Call Sheet.

We then had being given a tiny assignment to use a storyboard and the above we the brief being "Dan teaching with a student"

I have attempted it and now awaiting the next lesson.
